Daylily Terminology Band- A darker colored area just above the throat of a flower, on the petals only. Bicolor- Is a blossom of two different colors, petals one, sepals another. Black- or "near black" Daylilies are either very dark reds or very dark purples. Blend- Flower with intermingling of two or more colors. Crown- The small white core located between leaves and roots, that is the modified stem of the daylily plant. Some crown tissue must be present for any daylily division to be viable. Double- A flower with additional sets of petal segments set one within the other. Dusted- Flowers having structures that produce a glitter-like quality on the petal surface. Dwarf- Flower scapes up to 12” tall and may bear miniature, small, or large flowers. Edged- Distinctly different color along the outer edge of the segments of a daylily. Extended Bloom- or Extended flowering; Flowers that remain open 16 hours or more. Eye Zones- A wide ring around the top of the throat. Fan- also call a Division Refers to an individual unit of a clump, containing leaves, crown and roots. Within a clump, each fan is genetically identical to the parent. Flower- That part of a higher plant that is modified for reproduction and consists of a shortened axis bearing modified leaves. Fragrant- Daylilies that have a very light pleasing scent. Halo- Fainter ring than an eye-zone. Mid-Rib- The principal lengthwise vein of a flower petal.
Miniature- Less than 3” in diameter. They may be on dwarf, medium or tall scapes. Polychrome- Flowers blending and intermingling many colors without distinct bands. Re-bloom- Refers to daylilies that send up new scapes, usually after a short rest period. Re-curved-Petals- Reflex back toward the base, giving a rounded ball-like appearance. Roots- A part of the plant (usually underground) whose function is to act as support and anchorage, as a place of food storage and the primary organ of water and mineral absorption. Ruffling- Usually occurs around the edges of the petals and sepals. Scapes- A flowers stalk without leaves. Self- A flower having all the same color. Spider- A flower whose segments have a length-to-width ratio of at least 4 to 1. Length is measured with the segment fully extended. Width measurement is taken as the flower grows naturally.
